The Norfolk parish of Long Stratton lies in the South of the county and consists of two villages, namely Stratton St Mary and Stratton St Michael. The villages were strategically placed on the Roman Road, known as Pye Road, linking Norwich with Diss. Because of their prominent position the villages were able to hold their own race meeting on Tuesday 28th January 1840. The course, designed by Mr M Beverley, started behind the Swan Inn and extended straight to Fawncett before returning to a winning post at the Swan Inn. The opening Cup race was won by Mr J Brown’s Corringham, while two additional races completed the card. There is no evidence of future meetings in the village. |
